Seen And Not Heard

Inspired by the real life story of the “Rude and uncouth” riot of 200+ teenage schoolgirls at Heaton School in 1976, I’ve been researching and writing trying to uncover the real story about what happened when a Cambridge educated, comp-ed adverse Head Teacher decided his response to “Womens Lib” was to bring in corporal punishment for the girls.

After researching originally for a script that was in development as part of Live Theatres Playwriting Cohort, I’m now working with incredible producer Eilis McGowan to create a documentary, finding out what really happened. As a “Rude and uncouth” teenage girl of Heaton myself, (in the 00’s & 10’s) who was involved in protests of my own at the very same school - I’m excited to speak to the people involved.

Just 200 kids from Heaton, who sparked a national debate about corporal punishment, initiated parliamentary votes and pushed along the long, overdue conversation about legal child abuse in schools - leading to the abolishment of corporal punishment in schools.
